Program Requirements/Restrictions

  1. To enter the Paralegal Studies Advanced Technical Certificate program, the student must have earned an Associate of Arts, Associate of Science, or baccalaureate degree or higher from an accredited institution of higher learning with a degree other than Paralegal Studies or Paralegal Education.

Paralegal Studies Program

In addition to the requirements of Del Mar College transfer of credits for students graduating with a degree or certificate from Del Mar College, the Department of Business Administration and Entrepreneurship, Paralegal Studies Program accepts transfer legal specialty courses (designated "LGLA" at Del Mar College) for credit.

*Notwithstanding the provisions detailed below, in no circumstance will a student be awarded a PLGL.AAS degree or PLGS.ATC advanced technical certificate unless at least nine (9) semester credits or the equivalent of legal specialty course work is taught through synchronous face-to-face instruction or remote synchronous instruction, as defined by the American Bar Association Standing Committee on Paralegals.

*Del Mar College Paralegal Studies Program may award transfer credit for LGLA designated, legal specialty courses, except for LGLA-2266 Practicum: Legal Assistant/Paralegal (Capstone) and LGLA-2267 Practicum: Legal Assistant/Paralegal (Capstone), on a case-by-case basis determined by the Director of the Paralegal Studies Program, the Chair for the Department of Business Administration and Entrepreneurship, the Divisional Dean and Chief Academic Officer, under the following circumstances:

  1. Transfer credit may be awarded for substantially similar courses completed with a grade of "C" or higher earned from an ASA-approved program from a post-secondary academically accredited paralegal studies program within 10 years of the date of the request. To be considered "substantially similar":
    1. The transfer credit must be from a course that meets the definition of legal specialty as defined in the ABA Guidelines.
    2. The program must have policies and procedures in place to verify that the courses accepted in transfer were delivered through synchronous instruction.
    3. The program must satisfy all requirements for the award of transfer credit set forth in ABA Guideline G-302.1.7 (01/01/2023).
    4. The course must incorporate the same objectives and practical skills and similar topics and assignments and comparable course work as the legal specialty (LGLA) course sought to be credited as evidenced by a catalogue description, detailed syllabus, and course reference file.
    5. The legal specialty course must have an educational value of at least 3 college semester credit hours or stated hours mandated by the American Bar Association Standing Committee on Paralegals. A class sought to be transferred will not be accepted if it has less credit hours than the class offered at Del Mar College, and
    6. The legal specialty course must have been delivered in an instructional format accepted and approved by the ABA Standing Committee on Paralegals at the time the course was taken or being requested transfer credit, whichever is later.
  2. No more than twelve (12) semester credit hours of Paralegal Studies legal specialty course credit (LGLA courses) may be earned toward the AAS degree and advanced technical certificate by transfer credit.
  3. Students who wish to obtain transfer credit for any legal specialty course (LGLA) should submit a request to the Director of Paralegal Studies or the Chair of the Department of Business Administration and Entrepreneurship. The request must include the following:
    1. The name of the legal specialty (LGLA) course for which the student wishes to obtain transfer credit.
    2. The name and course number of the course the student wishes to transfer to include the
      1. Official transcript documenting the name of the course, the course grade, credits, and the semester and year the course was completed,
      2. The course description from the institution's catalog, and
      3. The course syllabus.
    3. The official transcript from the institution where the legal specialty course(s) were taken must be on file with the Del Mar College Student Records Office.
