There are centralized success centers plus individual learning labs to help you.

Stone Writing Center

The Stone Writing Center (SWC) at Del Mar College is temporarily located in the Coles Building on the Heritage Campus, CB 116 and CB 118 due to the closure of the White Library for renovation. Additional services are located in the Academic Learning Center in the Emerging Technologies Building, ET A123, on the Windward Campus. Instructional Programs

The SWC offers instructional programming, focusing on a variety of skills. Featured resources include SWC Experiences, Workshops on Demand, Workshops on Windward, Roxy Writer Blog, and Online Tips Sheets.

Writing Tutorials

Students are encouraged to visit the SWC which is temporarily located in CB 116 and CB 118 in the Coles Building on the Heritage Campus. The SWC offers the following services:

  1. On-Campus Tutoring Program

    If students want to improve their writing skills, they should check out the on-campus professional writing consultation services and interactive workshops offered by the Stone Writing Center. Writing consultants can help students at any stage of the writing process. Students can also take advantage of the SWC’s resources, including their popular writing blog and an extensive handout collection, by visiting the Stone Writing Center section of the Del Mar College website (http://delmar.edu/swc). Services and resources are available to all students in all disciplines.

  2. Online Tutoring Program

    If students prefer to receive help online, they should consider submitting their work to the Stone Writing Center Online (SWC Online) housed in Canvas. Writing consultants will read students’ work online and will send them individual comments to help them become stronger writers. Students can register for this service by visiting the Stone Writing Center section of the Del Mar College website (http://delmar.edu/swc).

  3. Ask a Writing Tutor Program

    This program allows students to speak with an SWC writing consultant by phone to ask quick questions about writing and submitting to SWC Online. Academic Learning Center

The Academic Learning Center (ALC), located in ET A123 of the Emerging Technologies Building on the Windward Campus, is staffed by faculty and staff from the Math Learning Center and the Stone Writing Center.

    In addition to offering math and writing tutorials, the ALC is also available for students who need a group or individual study space or access to a computer and printer.

Student Success Center

The Student Success Center (SSC) located in the St. Clair Building on the East Campus provides academic support for students who want assistance outside the regular classroom. Housed in the SSC are multi-discipline Peer Tutoring, Supplemental Instruction, Technology Resource Center, and student-oriented workshops. The contact number is (361) 698-2265.

The Technology Resource Center provides student computer workstations for academic support to include a variety of software programs, laptops and graphing calculators for student checkouts. The contact number is (361) 698-2234.

Individual Labs/Centers

1. Reading Lab

The Reading Lab offers a variety of services for students and community members to utilize. We are located in the Coles Building in Rooms 119 and 120 on the Heritage Campus. Our reading lab hours for the fall and spring semesters are as follows:

The types of services that we offer include the following:

  1. Reading assistance in all content areas including homework help.
  2. Free Tutoring in reading, vocabulary development, and Weaver assistance, especially for READ 0305, ENG 0305, INRW 0408, and ESOL courses. Our reading lab staff tutor students who need extra support in writing, specifically, reviewing or learning grammar rules, paragraph formation, MLA citation, and other mechanical processes related to writing for INRW courses.
  3. Help with navigating Canvas, WebDMC, DMC email, and Weaver, especially for READ 0305, ENG 0305, INRW 0408, and ESOL courses.
  4. 4. Use of 50 computers and printers. Students can print 5–6 pages in the Reading Lab or visit the Venters Business Building for larger printing jobs.
  5. Throughout the semester the Reading Lab offers free workshops to students, especially those enrolled in READ 0305, ENG 0305, INRW 0408, and ESOL courses.These workshops are designed to provide strategies to help students in reading and writing.

2. ESOL Lab

If you want to improve your English speaking and comprehension skills, visit the English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) Lab located in Rooms 102 and 104 in the Coles Building on the Heritage Campus.

If you are enrolled in ESOL courses, you will attend the ESOL Lab to receive additional instruction and practice with material covered in your ESOL classes.

The Lab offers a variety of instructional materials including books, audio, and computer-assisted instruction software. In addition, tutors are available to help with tutorial sessions organized on special topics throughout each semester.

3. Languages Lab

If you are enrolled in Spanish or French classes, visit the Languages Lab located in the Coles Building, Rooms 106 and 108, on the Heritage Campus. The Lab provides computerized language instruction, review materials and conversational practice. You can use computers, audio players, videos, and camcorders. Lab assistants lead conversational practice groups which emphasize oral interaction and proficiency.

4. Speech Communication Center

If you want help in the creation and performance of any speech activity, the Speech Communication Center (SCC) is the place to be, and the Center is located in General Academic and Music Building in GENC, Room C117 on the Heritage Campus.

The Speech Communication Center has personal computers, video viewing equipment, a conversation area and three practice rooms equipped with computer units with which you may incorporate presentation software into your presentations and video cameras with which to record yourself for self-analysis.

The Speech Communication Center is open to all students and faculty.

5. Math Learning Center

Do you need help with math or just want a place to study? Then join the hardworking individuals in the Math Learning Center (MLC). Students can expect high quality supplemental instruction from expertly trained tutors. The MLC supervisors are degreed full-time Mathematics Department faculty, skilled in various forms of instruction. The MLC has locations at the Heritage, Windward, and Oso Creek campus, as well as Online Tutoring. The hours of operation are listed below and vary depending on the location and semester.
