Legacy Act Application Process
A child (legacy recipient) of a Veteran must:
- Fill out the Hazlewood Exemption Application;
- Provide proof of eligibility or ineligibility for GI Bill benefits (Chapter 31, 33/Post-9/11) by requesting a certificate of eligibility for federal education benefits from the eBenefits website (https://www.ebenefits.va.gov/ebenefits) (if Veteran has active duty service after 9/11/2001); and
- Take both applications, letter of eligibility/ineligibility (if needed), along with a copy of the Veteran’s DD214, to the Veteran Services Office;
- Additional items that must be submitted include, a valid Texas Driver's License for student and veteran, a degree plan for your program of study, proof of registration in the Texas Hazlewood Database for veteran and student, Intent to enroll form, Disclaimer form and proof of dependency such as a birth certificate, etc. Receipt for payment of student services fee and any other non-mandatory fees.
Applications and all supporting documentation must be received by the institution no later than the last day of class of a term in order to be evaluated for that semester or term. If you have questions, please contact the Veteran Services Office.
